So you are planning to take a Salar de Uyuni tour and you are probably wondering how to take a bunch of creative and fun photos like you may have seen over the net. It takes a little bit of skill, but you don't need to be an expert photographer to impress those back home after your trip to these Bolivian salt flats. Here you have 5 useful tips on how to take creative photographs in a Salar de Uyuni tour.
IMAGINE THE RESULT BEFOREHAND
OK, so this is pretty basic, but in order to take a good photograph you must picture in your mind how the result will look beforehand. This encompasses every aspect of the composition, so use your imagination! Will it be interesting? Will it worth the effort? How will it look? And other technical aspects to take into account, as follows.
BE AWARE OF BLURRY PHOTOS
You remember those times when you go out to party, ask for a picture to a friend and next day you realize that is all blurry and out of focus? You don't want that after travelling so many kilometres. So be sure your picture is focused. I'ts worth to bring props like a tripod with you and, if you don't have one, use the environment to support your camera in still photos. And if you are going to take a photo freehand, don't move your hand until a second or two after the photo has been taken. That way you avoid a blurry photo because you have moved your hand before time.
PERSPECTIVE
This one is pretty tricky. When we talk about perspective and depth of field, you have to think out of the box in order to take creative photographs. The Uyuni Salt Flats offer a flat salt white desert where you can play with the distance, making objects that are far away look small but in the same level as the objects or persons ahead.
BRING USEFUL OBJECTS WITH YOU
And for useful, we mean objects that will let you imagination fly. You never know, any object could be useful when properly used with perspective. You could use a toy to make it a giant monster you face in Uyuni, you could "ride" on your own shoe as if it was a vehicle, climb a can... The possibilities are endless. Just make sure you pack the proper objects before you start your Uyuni tour.
SEASON MATTERS
Due to the unique characteristics of the Salar de Uyuni, depending on when you are travelling the landscape can totally change (you can read when to go to Salar de Uyuni here). It's not the same taking photos in the dry season, when you will have a flat white solid floor, than going when the sky and ground merge in a seemingly infinite mirror, with all its damp ground. In the rainy season you will have every person or object (and the sky) reflected, whereas in the dry season you won't have any of this.
