There are a lot of ways of experiencing Salar de Uyuni tours. You can travel there by bus, plane, train… But why going on a boring long drive to the Uyuni salt flats and skip all the wonders you can visit on your way? There are great reasons why it's worth going from La Paz to Uyuni starting your tour right in La Paz.
Lots of attractions await to be discovered on your way that otherwise you would be skipping. Driving through the city of El Alto and heading to the Chile/Bolivia border and moving to the Andean countryside in the vast Altiplano. Enormous mountains and plateaus can be seen on the way. All this, while you enjoy your ride sharing experiences and learning with a guide or meeting other travellers.
And if you are keen on archaeology, there are also archaeological remains such as Pre-Inca burial sites (chullpas) located in top of mountains and towns, and even a train station that takes you back on time to the Wild West.
But the jewel in the crown of a journey like this comes with the Sajama National Park. This park was the first opened in Bolivia and was declared a natural reserve in 1939. It was also declared as an UNESCO World Heritage in 2003. It offers snow capped mountains such as the iconic Sajama volcano, the highest mountain in Bolivia with an elevation of 6542 meters. There are also the famous Sajama Lines, similar to the Nazca Lines, covering 16.000 kilometres and considered as the largest artwork in the world.
Sajama offers all kind of possibilities: from hikes in green pastures and queñua tree forests, polychromed chullpas and the Sajama basecamp, to boiling geysers and hot springs where you can relax with such a spectacular landscape surrounding you. And we can’t forget the local flora and fauna: you can see thousands of pink flamingos in pristine lagoons, llamas, alpacas, vizcachas and more. There are also small traditional villages with quaint colonial churches, where you can learn from the locals’ traditions and enjoy a local homestay. If you want to discover just the beauty of Sajama National Park, you are free to join one of our stand-alone Sajama tours.
In the end, you will reach Uyuni, and visit the mighty salar, but you will have an entirely different story to tell, knowing the magnitude of the Altiplano and the stunning Sajama on your way, while others simply take a ride (often with expensive plane tickets) to Uyuni and miss it. If you are willing to experience it yourself we invite you to take a look at our Salar de Uyuni tours.
