The city, founded by Alonso de Mendoza in 1548, is today a very peculiar city. There may not be any other similar city in the World. A huge ethnic conglomerate, sheltered by the Illimani, a huge 6500 meters high mountain. A city in reverse of the others, where the poorest people live higher at 4000m altitude and the wealthy live below, at 3300 m.
